Walking for pancreatic cancer research this September
In September, I’m taking on a challenge that means more to me than just reaching a kilometre goal.
I’m walking 78km throughout September to raise money for pancreatic cancer research, in honour of my Dad.
Four years ago, pancreatic cancer took my Dad from us.
Four years can sound like a long time, but when you lose someone you love, the calendar doesn’t make the loss disappear. You simply learn how to carry it with you.
There are still so many moments when I wish I could pick up the phone and call Dad. When something happens and I instinctively think, I need to tell Dad that. I miss the conversations, the laughs, his presence, and all the little ordinary moments that I never realised I would one day wish I could have back.
Most of all, I wish he had been given more time.
More time to watch his family grow.
More birthdays.
More conversations.
More memories.
More ordinary days together.
Pancreatic cancer is an incredibly devastating disease, and unfortunately, too many families know the heartbreak of losing someone to it. Research into earlier detection, better treatments and improved survival is so important.
That’s why, this September, I’m turning some of my grief into something positive.
78 kilometres.
It might seem like a small thing, but every kilometre represents something. Every walk is a reminder of Dad, of how much he is loved and missed, and of why continuing to support research matters.
I’m walking for my Dad.
I’m walking for the families currently facing pancreatic cancer.
I’m walking for those who have lost someone they love.
And I’m walking for the hope that one day, a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer won’t mean losing someone far too soon.
I know Dad will never get those extra years we wished for. But if the money raised through this challenge can contribute, even in a small way, to giving another family more time together, then every step will be worth it.
So throughout September, I’ll be putting one foot in front of the other and walking those 78km — carrying Dad with me every step of the way.
This one is for you, Dad. 💜
