Support my challenge to fight pancreatic cancer

This September, I'm walking 71km for the 71 Australians who die from pancreatic cancer each week.

Pancreatic cancer is now the 4th biggest cancer killer in Australia, and because early-stage pancreatic cancer rarely causes symptoms, the survival rates are devastating.

If you are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer tomorrow, there is only a 12.5% chance you'll be alive in 5 years.

But research can change this. Your support will fund life-saving pancreatic cancer research and improve survival rates.

So this September, I'm challenging myself to get up, get moving and walk 71km to fight this terrible disease.

Please make a donation to support me, and together...

We will remember them. We will honour them. We will fight for them.

Thank you all!

Monday 30th Sep
Today marks the last day of the 2024 Remember September Challenge. A huge thankyou to all my sponsors. Your support has been amazing and I couldn't have done it without you!
I walked more than 400km and raised almost $2000 to go towards much needed research.  Together we can make a difference to change the outcomes for people affected with pancreatic cancer.  💜

Today

Monday 16th Sep
Today, 3 years ago my mum passed away after a 22 months battle with pancreatic cancer.
I am doing this challenge and fundraiser in memory of my mum and all the other people affected by this cancer.💜 So far I covered more than 200km in the first 2 weeks of this challenge, with plenty more km to go.🏃‍♀️

Crop and Swap

Saturday 14th Sep
Big thank you to everyone that donated money at today's crop and swap. 😁💚

Why stop when you are having fun?

Thursday 12th Sep
I know I already reached my fundraising goal, but why stop now when there are still so many more days to go in this challenge?
I want to take the opportunity to thank my family and friends, colleagues, neighbours and everyone that has donated money to this good cause and supported this fundraiser. Thank you all! Your support has been amazing!

Lets get started

Wednesday 28th Aug
In a few days I will start my fundraising challenge - Remember September in honor of my mum Rosemarie. I plan to walk 71km per week or 284km in September, a goal I can achieve.  Should I walk even more, I will donate an extra $1 per extra km walked at the end of the challenge.
Please support my challenge to help other people affected by pancreatic cancer!

Until we meet again

Wednesday 21st Aug
In July 2021, I was able to travel back to Germany to see my family. Again, I count my lucky stars, as I know of many people who were unable to travel to see their loved ones in their final moments. My heart goes out to all of them.
My mum was well, but had started to develop jaundice once again. Shortly after my arrival, she had to go back to hospital to clear a bile duct blockage. Unfortunately, the extended stay in hospital depleted her of much needed energy and over the next few weeks my mum started to deteriorate.
I was glad I could be there, care for her, be with her in her final weeks of life.
She passed away on Thursday the 16th of September 2021, aged 68.

Cancer, Chemo and Corona

Wednesday 21st Aug
I visited my family again in December 2019.  My mum had just started chemo and was glad I was around when she settled into her new routine. There was still hope that the chemo would shrink the tumor, so my mum would qualify for the whipple surgery. Turns out my mum didn't qualify for surgery at the end and ongoing chemotherapy was her only treatment. Despite the fact that there was no cure for her cancer and despite the fact that the world was grip of the Coronavirus, my mum soldiered on.
Yes, there was anxiety and anger from time to time. Having done contract tracing at the time, I am well aware of the impact the Coronavirus had on cancer patients and their family members. As if the cancer diagnosis itself isn't hard enough to deal with, throw in another life threatening virus, isolation and lockdowns. It still makes me sad to think back of that time.
I spoke to my mum daily during that time. I motivated her to stay positive, to eat healthy, to go for walks in nature. Her chemo was working well and she learned to cope with the side effects and enjoyed the days she was feeling well. What an amazing women, my mum!

My mum's diagnosis

Monday 19th Aug
I had travelled to Germany in August 2019 to see my family.  My mum was happy; she had lost some weight and looked healthy and well.  Little did we know that her weight loss was the first sign of her upcoming battle. The diagnosis came a few months later on 31 October 2019. My mum had been in hospital for some investigations, after a family friend was concerned she had developed jaundice. Prior to that my mum had complained about some stomach upsets and itchy skin.  She had been on a holiday and put the symptoms down to the rich food and hotel  bed linen.

She called me early in the morning to deliver the news - pancreatic cancer.
