Support my challenge to fight pancreatic cancer

This September, I'm walking 75km for the 75 Australians who die from pancreatic cancer each week.  Pancreatic cancer is now the 3rd biggest cancer killer in Australia, and because early-stage pancreatic cancer rarely causes symptoms, the survival rates are devastating. If you are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer tomorrow, there is only a 13% chance you'll be alive in 5 years. But research can change this. Your support will fund ground-breaking pancreatic cancer research and improve survival rates. So this September, I'm challenging myself to get up, get moving and walk 75km to fight this terrible disease. Please make a donation to support me, and together... We will remember them. We will honour them. We will fight for them.

My Updates

Walk in hometown of ballarat

Friday 3rd Oct
Not much walking today as the weather is drizzly and cold as Spring blossoms appear from bare branches. Back in the Southern Hemisphere now and Ballarat is hosting a photo Biennale with other art forms.

A few steps on a long journey

Saturday 27th Sep
Some stops for photos but drove back from Three Rivers to Arroyo Grande today, experiencing a microburst thunderstorm in the hills near Paso Robles. Dangerous with heavy rain and rocks and water rushing across the road. Total driving distance 1000.7 miles over 5 days. Total walking distance 45 km(28 mi).

Moro rock at sequoia national park

Thursday 25th Sep
What an amazing day. Climbed the 350 steps up to the top of this ancient rock with huge views over the Sierra Nevada range. My legs were like jelly from being scared of the height. Lots to see and a week would have been great.

23rd sept yosemite national park

Wednesday 24th Sep
Walked my shoes into the ground today, covering 23 km and my legs certainly felt it. Yosemite Falls trail through Cook's meadow then onto Mirror Lake return (about 8-10 miles) then to Glacier Point to walk around and then the Mariposa Grove walk to the Grizzly Giant Sequoia before going to Fish Camp for the night. A splendid day.

Yosemite horse trail ride

Wednesday 24th Sep
A leisurely start taking some photos of the Narrow Gauge Inn. Only a small walk today for me as the horse, Fancy Pants, did the 2 hr ride down and up the mountain trails through stony creeks in the cool of the ponderosa pines. Drove many windy, zigzag roads, up to 7000 ft and down again to Kings Canyon National Park. Not much time to walk today.

Mariposa art walk

Monday 22nd Sep
Departed Arroyo Grande for a long drive to near Yosemite National Park. Not much walking today but lots of stopping to take in the small towns and extensive vistas. Did 355 miles.

Grover beach sand dunes

Saturday 20th Sep
Southerly walk along the thundering Pacific ocean to Slappy Joe's at Oceano then back to Grover Beach entrance where vehicles can drive on the beach for recreational fishing, surfing (although the water is a bit cold), camping for a fee or just walking.

Bob jones trail

Friday 19th Sep
Walked part of the Bob Jones trail via a golf course and foot bridge to get to Mulligan's restaurant for lunch with local school parents then back to Avila Beach for icecream with our grandson. Grey clouds with a few spots of rain today.

Two grandmas are we.

Thursday 18th Sep
Cool morning. Just right for a leisurely stroll along the wooden path into the sand dunes and a eucalyptus grove where, in October, Monarch butterflies come to be warm after migrating from as far as Canada.

Pismo reserve walk

Wednesday 17th Sep
Up the High road and down the Low road then across towards the Lone Oak but found myself with the cows and their new calves. Missed a turn somewhere. Low mist hanging in the Pismo valley but go high enough and the sunshine spreads over you like butter on toast.

Sat 13th exploratorium, san francisco

Monday 15th Sep
Lovely walk from the Palace Hotel, which is 150 years old, to Pier 15 where the interactive Science Exploratorium is housed. Hours of fun at a child's fingertips. Adults too! Walked around from 11:30am until 2:30 then walked to Pier 39, shopped then return to the hotel.

Grover beach to pismo beach and return

Friday 12th Sep
White-capped waves, the roar of the Pacific ocean dying to shallow lapping on the sand, dogs walking their owners, kites flying, surfers in wet suits and many walkers just like myself all loving the beach.

Horseback riding on clydesdales.

Thursday 11th Sep
Today I drove early to Cambria on the coast then along a dead end road to the Dead End. I arrived early, 8:00 am, for a horseback ride on Clydesdales at 9 am and the ranch is next to the Cambria cemetery so I walked around. It really is the DEAD END. Very well looked after though. The horse ride was awesome but I couldn't count my mount Lady's steps as part of my steps.

Avila beach

Tuesday 9th Sep
Walked the Bob Jones pathway from a tennis resort to Avila Beach with the morning mist just clearing at 10:00am, along with daughter,-in-law.

Rodeo strawberry farm walk

Monday 8th Sep
Early morning in the creek area with the smell of strawberries wafting over the road.

Arroyo grande walk

Sunday 7th Sep
From our son and daughter-in-law"s house to her parent's house return passing by a lovely park.

Early morning before the californian sun

Saturday 6th Sep
Set out at 6:30 am to walk to San Jacinto town and the Estudillo mansion built in 1884. Walked around the outside fence but found a beautifully painted bird as well.

Round the block

Thursday 4th Sep
Concrete footpaths still warm from the hot sunshine at the end of the day were the ground I walked on today. A visit to Aldi and Walmart was the reason for the dusk journey to browse the goods for sale, specifically to buy a biro as the only one I brought with me ran out.

1st day

Tuesday 2nd Sep
Sunny and hot all day. Shopping in air conditioned centres in Hemet then a sunset walk around the block as dusk settled.
