Pancreatic cancer is a highly aggressive cancer that has limited treatment options available.
It rarely presents with symptoms in its early stages which means the disease is often detected after it has advanced.
It's often lethal, with 70% of Australians dying within one year of their diagnosis.
My mum and my grandad were part of this 70%, and it’s difficult to describe how truly devastating pancreatic cancer is.
A donation to Pankind supports pancreatic cancer research aimed at improving early detection methods and discovering novel therapies to increase survival rates.
My mum's cancer journey:
My mum was diagnosed and began chemotherapy in September 2023. The chemotherapy made her really sick, and she lost her hair, but life remained mostly the same. By May, the side effects from the chemotherapy were worsening, however, we could still go out and spend time with each other. In June, she went in for a procedure, but sadly, it was discovered that the tumour had already metastasised, and she was now out of treatment options. While in hospital her health deteriorated rapidly, and she passed away 8 weeks later. The entire journey from diagnosis to passing was 10 and a half months... a tragedy.
I believe that when faced with a poor cancer prognosis, whether that’s for themselves or a loved one, people experience a relentless battle between their minds and hearts. The unity of the two is acceptance. I remember when I first realised that my mum was not going to recover from the cancer. It was the first day I was able to see her since she was admitted into hospital, I walked into her room and as soon as I saw her, I knew. I'll never forget the surreal feeling of trying to reconcile that 4 days ago we were out walking and having coffee, to now seeing her completely bedbound.
Since her passing, I find a lot of peace in walking. I am glad to be walking both in memory of her, and to raise funds so that hopefully there can be a few less people that would have to go through what we did.
We will remember them. We will honour them. We will fight for them.
My Memory Wall for my mum.
